Introduction : Why English Language Dominates

The English language is not just a language today; it is a global language that influences and dominates the world day by day. It is a spoken language easily found in any place in the world because there is always someone who is aware of English, even if they may not speak it properly. In this article, we will describe how the English language dominates and has become the world’s most dominant language.

We will not delve into the debate or the past regarding its origin or history. As of now, in 2024, English is a language that can influence masses. In today’s world, especially in African, South American, and Asian countries, it has become a rule to learn, understand, and speak English as fluently as one’s native language. People are addicted to the use of the English language, even when it is not necessary. Parents want their children to speak only in English with relatives and friends, with the proper accent. It has become a matter of dignity for parents that their children understand and speak English. In many Asian schools, students are not allowed to speak any language other than English.

In Europe, the English language is not as big of a problem, as European nations are developed and wealthy. However, in Africa, South America, and Asia, the language barrier is a significant issue.

Now let’s examine why today’s generation is so influenced by the English language:

Why are people influenced by English to such an extent?

The answer is somehow connected to the past. As we all know, the world was not as it is today; it went through cycles of colonialism, during which vast parts of the world were colonised by the British, whose native language is English. They were primarily responsible for establishing the English ecosystem. The British wanted their work done, primarily to make money from their colonies. To do so, they needed to remove the language barrier. The British were powerful both economically and technologically, so instead of learning other native languages, they created a system in which people understood their language.

But even though colonialism is no longer prevalent, why is the English language still dominant ?

Colonialism may have ended, but its deep-rooted influence on people’s minds persists. Although colonised countries have gained physical freedom from their colonisers, their mentality has not changed with time. For them, the English language is always associated with power and influence. English has become everything to them, to the extent that they often forget their own traditional languages. This situation arises due to the collapse of their education systems, which prioritise English over native languages. The education system plays a significant role in perpetuating this cycle.

Is this the only reason?

Clearly, no. There are other factors influencing the dominance of the English language as a global language:

  • 1. Past incidents: Many people’s mentalities have been shaped by past incidents such as colonialism, wars (WWI and WWII), etc. Success is often associated with proficiency in English.
  • 2. Dominance of English-speaking countries: The majority of native English-speaking countries are developed, leading people to associate English with development.
  • 3. Job requirements: Almost all multinational corporations require candidates with English writing and speaking skills.
  • 4. Education system: Most subjects are now taught in English, leading to a decline in the use of other languages.
  • 5. Government records and data: Many governments worldwide maintain their records and data in English.
  • 6. Internet usage: English is the primary language used by the majority of internet users, even in non-English speaking countries like India.
  • 7. Social influence: In non-English speaking societies, proficiency in English often gives individuals an edge.
  • 8. Celebrity influence: Celebrities, regardless of their fame or origin, tend to prefer speaking English in interviews and conferences.
  • 9. American dominance: As the world’s superpower, America’s influence and the prevalence of English are closely linked.
  • 10. Cultural appeal: The open culture of English-speaking countries attracts people who seek freedom, relationships, and economic opportunities.

The above points are just a few examples of the factors that contribute to English’s global dominance. There are many more reasons why English influences the world.

Can English language dominance be challenged?

Answering this question is not easy. English has become a necessity in today’s world, facilitating communication between nations. It provides a platform for people to express their thoughts to the masses, as it is a global language. English-speaking countries have been able to establish dominance, culture, and values worldwide because of the widespread understanding of their language.

However, the future is uncertain, and while unforeseen events may occur, there remains a strong possibility that English will continue to be preferred due to its widespread usage and familiarity.
