Airlines have to return money in case of cancellation and delay of flights
The Government of the United States of America is going to implement some new rules regarding refunds and the quality of travel for flying travellers. These rules must be followed by every airline company in the USA, whether they like them or not. The new rules include tough statements regarding the refund of money in case a flight gets canceled or delayed significantly; the airlines are required to give customers their money back automatically. There are also specific timing guidelines for flight delays:
1. If the domestic flight is delayed more than 3 hours.
2. If the international flight is delayed more than 6 hours.
In both cases, the customer will get a refund.

The refund policy applies if the customer booked tickets directly from the airline website or through a travel website like Expedia. Also, if a customer’s bag is lost and isn’t delivered within 12 hours, then a refund can be claimed.
The timing of the refund should be strictly within a week, and the airline department is not allowed to automatically give customers vouchers instead of refunding money unless the customer asks for them. The Department of Transportation has ordered the airlines to have six months to follow these new rules. This is a huge change in passengers’ rights against the undefined and complicated refund structure which advantages airlines for everything. The Department of Transportation is really in action; they are also considering making more changes for passenger satisfaction, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
The DOT (Department of Transportation) wants to make sure families do not feel any kind of discomfort regarding qualities, seating, and other things when traveling through airlines. The DOT wants to ensure families can sit together without paying extra fees. They also want to ensure customers with any kind of disability are treated well.
Buttigieg says they are working on and considering more rules which will ultimately benefit each customer from hidden fees, bad quality experiences, and discomfort of airlines. The new rules also clarify that if the customer pays for something extra like Wi-Fi or a specific seat and doesn’t get it, then the customer gets a refund for that too.
The Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement that Passengers should deserve to know upfront all the information about what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask or delay.
All of this is happening after the Department of Transportation fined Southwest Airlines with a huge amount for all the problems during the holidays in 2022. Buttigieg says airlines should give refunds when they’re supposed to, and the new rules make sure they do.
Buttigieg stated that the new rules will tighten airlines from any type of negligence; further, he knows that airlines might not like these rules, but he thinks they can handle it. Airlines are now saying they already offer refundable tickets, and passengers can choose those if they want.
Overall, the Department of Transportation says airlines have given back $3 billion to customers from 2020 to 2023.
