The USA’s students divided over Israel–Hamas war ,Tensions are still running high at colleges across the United States following the clash and arrest of over 300 pro-Palestinian demonstrators in large-scale police operations at Columbia and City College of New York. Professors at Columbia have thrown their weight behind the student protesters, condemning the heavy-handed police response on campus. Rashid Khalidi, a prominent Columbia professor, criticise harshly the university’s leadership, predicting that their decision to call in law enforcement to disperse protesters would be remembered unfavourably.
Meanwhile, at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), classes were abruptly canceled after a violent clash the previous night between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrators erupted into a chaotic brawl. The incident has prompted the UC system to launch an investigation into why it took law enforcement over an hour to intervene after arriving on campus.
Throughout Wednesday, protests persisted, with activists occupying the lobby of a building at Fordham University in New York City and student demonstrators gathering at a university in Texas. Police presence was lifted at UCLA, indicating a potential crackdown on the encampment established by protesters.
The clashes and subsequent arrests have sparked a broader conversation about free speech, campus safety, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Many are questioning the role of law enforcement in handling such protests and calling for greater dialogue and understanding among students with differing perspectives. As tensions continue to simmer, colleges are grappling with how to navigate these complex issues while ensuring the safety and well-being of their campus communities.
