Bethel Park, Pennsylvania — Thomas Matthew Crooks, the young man who attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally, has a background that sheds light on his troubled journey. Rejection from the Rifle Team

Crooks’ high school experience included a failed attempt to join the Bethel Park High School rifle team. According to former classmates, Crooks tried out for the team but was quickly dismissed due to his lack of skill and inappropriate conduct. The school’s rifle range, measuring 50 feet in length and 21 feet in width, was where Crooks’ aspirations were dashed.

One classmate recounted Crooks’ poor performance during tryouts, highlighting an incident where Crooks shot from the seventh lane, the closest to the right wall, but missed so badly that he hit the left wall instead. “He tried out… and was such a comically bad shot he was unable to make the team and left after the first day,” the classmate said.

Beyond his marksmanship issues, Crooks’ behavior raised red flags among his peers and coaches. Known for making “off-color” jokes, Crooks’ interactions with others were often troubling. A former coach, experienced in training Navy marksmen, quickly identified Crooks as a problematic individual. “Our old coach was a stickler; he trained Navy marksmen, so he knew people. He knew when someone’s not the greatest person,” a classmate explained.

Classmates noticed several warning signs in Crooks’ behavior and comments. “We noticed a few things Thomas said and how he interacted with other people… He said some things that were kind of concerning,” another classmate mentioned. These early indicators of Crooks’ potential for troubling behavior went largely unaddressed until his drastic actions at the Trump rally.
