NEWS AFFAIRS 7 : WHERE EVERY STORY HAS IT'S AFFAIR!
The cost of getting a short-term visa to visit Sri Lanka went up from $50 to $100 in April. This increase happened because Sri Lanka changed its visa system. Instead of using Electronic Travel Authorizations (ETAs) internally, they started using an e-visa system run by a company called VFS Global.
Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister, Harin Fernando, said the price went up because VFS Global didn’t include the option for 30-day visas when they started processing visas on April 17. However, VFS Global said they followed the instructions given by Sri Lanka’s Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Both sides agreed to bring back the $50 30-day visas on May 7.
Another problem is the fees charged by VFS Global. Sri Lanka stopped using the ETA system because the website was often hacked. They chose VFS Global because it’s a well-known company that works with many governments worldwide. But people in Sri Lanka’s travel industry are unhappy with the fees charged by VFS Global. They say it’s too much and accuse Sri Lankan leaders of corruption.
Some people from seven countries namely India, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand can get free visas to enter Sri Lanka, but they still have to pay VFS Global’s fees. The Sri Lankan government is considering adding 60 more countries to the free visa list.
In short, getting a visa to visit Sri Lanka has become more expensive, partly due to changes in the visa system and the fees charged by VFS Global.
