Has Justice Clarence Thomas Broken Tax Law?
Two Democratic senators are asking Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas if he repaid a loan he got from a friend to buy a luxury motorhome. They’re concerned Thomas might have broken tax laws by not reporting the loan or its forgiveness.
Key Points:
- Senators Ron Wyden and Sheldon Whitehouse wrote a letter to Thomas’s lawyer, asking if Thomas repaid his friend Anthony Welters for a $267,230 loan for the motorhome.
- They say Thomas didn’t report this loan or its forgiveness on his financial disclosure forms, which could mean he didn’t report it for taxes either.
- The loan was first reported in August, and Welters stopped collecting payments in 2008, according to the Senate Finance Committee.
- Thomas’s lawyer said in January that Thomas paid back Welters, but the senators don’t think that’s a clear answer.
- They want to know by June 3 if Thomas repaid the loan and if it was forgiven, and if so, how much he paid in taxes on it.
- This inquiry is part of a bigger issue about Thomas’s ethics. He’s faced criticism for accepting gifts from a billionaire and for his wife’s involvement in election disputes.
- Democrats have asked Thomas to recuse himself from cases involving former President Donald Trump because of his wife’s actions, but Thomas has still been involved in those cases.
