San Jose Stabbing Incident Overview
In a shocking incident in downtown San Jose, a woman allegedly stabbed a man to death while he was sleeping, after yelling, “You spit on my sister!” The attack occurred on June 2, 2024, near Roosevelt Park, according to court documents from Santa Clara County.
Details of the Attack
The accused, Sylvia Aurora Ortega, 28, has been charged with first-degree murder. Police reports state that officers found the victim bleeding and unresponsive on North 17th Street and East Santa Clara Street. The attack happened in broad daylight, around 11 a.m. Ortega lives just a few blocks away from the crime scene, on 13th Street.
Witness Accounts
A witness, who had been sleeping in a parked car with the victim, recounted the horrifying events to the police. She described how Ortega appeared suddenly, shouting accusations before opening the car door and attacking the victim. The witness said Ortega and the victim fought on top of her, and she noticed the victim bleeding when Ortega stepped back. When the witness tried to call for help, Ortega grabbed her phone and threw it to the ground.
Another witness reported hearing the voices of three women arguing, including a voice he recognized as “China,” a woman known in the neighborhood for always carrying a knife and having a reputation for violence. Investigators matched this description to Ortega.

Suspect’s Criminal History
Ortega has a long history of criminal activity, starting from her teenage years. As a juvenile, she was convicted of assault with a knife. Her adult record includes convictions for various felony and misdemeanor crimes in 2024, 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2019. At the time of the recent homicide, Ortega was on active parole for a prior stabbing conviction. This extensive criminal background has led authorities to consider her a significant threat to society.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Following the attack, Ortega fled the scene before police arrived. The San Jose Police Department launched an investigation, and three days later, they arrested Ortega and booked her into jail. Detective Christina Jize detailed the incident in court documents, highlighting Ortega’s violent behavior.
Legal Proceedings and Current Status
The District Attorney’s Office has expressed serious concern about Ortega’s potential danger to the public, citing her numerous prior convictions and history of violent behavior. As of now, Ortega remains in custody at a Santa Clara County women’s jail without bail. The case is set to proceed in court, where Ortega faces first-degree murder charges. If convicted, she could face severe penalties, given her extensive criminal record and the nature of the crime.
