Apple is getting ready to release the Apple iPhone 16 series this fall, but before that, on Monday, June 10, they will reveal the software that will work on both the new iPhones and many existing ones. We’ve got some hints about what’s coming, and it’s going to be exciting.
According to a person who knows a lot about the industry, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, in his latest newsletter called Power On, the iPhone screen will have new ways to customise it.
Firstly, the iPhone home screen will be different from what we’re used to. Gurman says, “Users will be able to change the color of app icons and put them wherever they want. For example, you could make all your social icons blue or finance-related ones green—and they don’t have to be in the standard grid that’s been there since 2007.“
This will make each iPhone look very different from others, and from all the iPhones before it. You could arrange apps to look like eyes and a mouth, colour action games red, platform games yellow, or even have one empty home page except for a bottom drawer.
We don’t know all the details yet about how this will work or how much we can change app icons, but even the idea of moving away from the grid is a big change—although Android users have had this feature for a while.
The June 10 presentation is expected to talk a lot about AI, which Gurman says will also give the iPhone a cool new feature: AI-generated emoji. Gurman explains, “One exciting feature will use AI to create new emojis. Apple is making software that can make custom emojis based on what users are texting. So, you’ll have a new emoji for any occasion, beyond what Apple already offers.”
How many times have you looked for the perfect emoji and settled for one that’s not quite right, leaving the person you’re messaging confused?
There are more changes on the way: Gurman has said before that Apple employees told him iOS 18 will be the biggest iPhone software update ever.
