In a poignant and deeply emotional segment at the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Wednesday night, the grief of families who lost loved ones during the Afghanistan withdrawal was transformed into a moment of inspiration and patriotism. This touching tribute was followed by a powerful performance from country music artist Brian Kelley, alongside the Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ Choir.
Honoring the Fallen
The night began with heartfelt tributes from the families of the 13 service members who lost their lives during the chaotic withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. These heroes, whose names were solemnly repeated by the crowd, included:

Their families shared their grief and called on voters to support the Republican nominee, Donald Trump, in his bid to return to the White House.
A Patriotic Performance
Following the emotional tributes, country music artist Brian Kelley took the stage with the Holy Redeemer Church of God in Christ Choir. Their performance uplifted the spirits of the audience and set the stage for a powerful display of patriotism.
Seven fraternity brothers from the University of North Carolina then marched down the aisles carrying American flags to the foot of the stage. These fraternity members, including Alex Johnson, had previously defended the American flag on their campus when a mob attempted to take it down.

Defending the Flag
Alex Johnson spoke to the delegates and the national TV audience, recounting the incident at the University of North Carolina. He described how a group of students, including members of the fraternity Alpha Epsilon Pi and Pi Kappa Phi, stood guard over the American flag when protestors tried to replace it with the flag of Palestine.
“When a mob tried to take down the American flag on our campus, we knew we couldn’t let that happen. We stood guard, we held it up, and we did not let it fall. It was all about respect, not just for the cloth, but for everything that the flag stands for. Too many people have sacrificed everything for it. The least we could do was keep it flying. And tonight, we are proud to honor our flag again,” Johnson said.
The Incident on Campus
The incident Johnson referred to occurred on the campus’ Polk Place Quad, where members of the group Students for Justice in Palestine at the University of North Carolina had taken down the American flag. The fraternity brothers, supported by interim Chancellor Lee Roberts and law enforcement, ensured that the Stars and Stripes was raised again to its proper place.
The protests on campus were part of a larger movement concerning the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel. The protestors demanded transparency regarding UNC’s investments, divestment from companies supporting what they termed “Israeli genocide,” and a full academic boycott.
The emotional segment at the RNC highlighted the themes of sacrifice, patriotism, and the enduring strength of the American spirit. As the night progressed, the blend of mourning and celebration served as a powerful reminder of the values and principles that many Americans hold dear.
