6 Earthquakes Shake Northwest Georgia in Last 30 Days

Northwest Georgia has experienced six earthquakes over the past 30 days. While some residents felt the tremors, no damage was reported. The US Geological Survey (USGS) provided details on these quakes.

The most recent earthquakes occurred on June 6 and June 7 near Lake Lanier and Buford. People living nearby felt these quakes and reported them to the USGS, but there was no damage.

Other quakes happened in rural areas near Resaca and Tunnel Hill, affecting several farms.

Here’s a summary of the recent earthquakes in Georgia:

  1. June 7: A 1.7 magnitude quake hit under Lake Lanier, three miles northwest of Buford, at 1:30 am, at a depth of 1.7 miles. Five residents reported feeling it.
  2. June 6: A 2.5 magnitude quake occurred two miles northwest of Buford at 11:15 pm, at a depth of 2.6 miles. It was felt by 115 people.
  3. June 3: A 2.2 magnitude quake struck two miles southwest of Tunnel Hill at 4:45 pm, eight miles deep. No one reported feeling it.
  4. May 18: A 2.2 magnitude quake hit five miles west of LaGrange at 2:23 am, at a shallow depth of 0.2 miles. Three people reported it.
  5. May 19: A 2.0 magnitude quake occurred six miles northwest of Resaca at 4:18 am, at a depth of 5.6 miles. No reports were received.
  6. May 9: A 2.3 magnitude quake struck six miles northwest of Resaca at 12:25 am, at a depth of 5.8 miles. One person reported it.

In total, 69 earthquakes were recorded in Georgia by the USGS over the past year. The strongest earthquake in Georgia in the last 40 years was a 4.3 magnitude quake near Lincolnton, according to EarthQuakeTrack.com.
