In the central United States (U.S), severe storms, including tornadoes, caused devastation across several states like Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. At least 15 people lost their lives, and many others were injured. These storms began late Saturday and left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity.
In Texas, a tornado struck the Valley View area, north of Dallas, resulting in seven fatalities. Search and rescue efforts are underway, and Texas Governor Gregg Abbott has taken steps to provide assistance to those affected by the storms.
The tornado in Texas caused significant damage to homes, a gas station, and vehicles on a highway. The destruction is described as extensive.
In Oklahoma, a tornado in Mayes County claimed the lives of at least two people. In Arkansas, five people died due to storms, which also caused power outages and flash flooding.
Louisville, Kentucky, also experienced a death related to the storms. The Indianapolis 500 race was delayed for four hours due to the severe weather.
The storms left nearly half a million people without power across multiple states. Tornado alerts remained active in several areas.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado in Valley View had wind speeds of up to 135 miles per hour. Multiple tornadoes hit the region, but the exact number is still being determined.
As officials assessed the extent of the damage on Sunday, initial search and rescue operations were wrapping up. The governor mentioned that authorities would conduct one final sweep of damaged buildings to ensure no one else was trapped or missing.
