Pastor Robert Morris’ lawyer blamed 12 year old girl for initiating sexual contact

In 1982, Robert Morris, a 21-year-old pastor, was traveling the country with his family, spreading his Christian faith to young audiences. Cindy Clemishire, then a 12-year-old girl, was among those who encountered Morris during his visits. On Christmas that year, an incident occurred that would cast a long shadow over both their lives.

The Incident

Cindy Clemishire, a child who enjoyed playing with Barbie dolls and wore flowery pink pajamas, recounts that Morris initiated “inappropriate sexual behavior” with her while staying at her parents’ home in Oklahoma. She claims Morris invited her to his room before bed, and trusting him as a respected adult, she complied. According to Clemishire, this led to repeated acts of molestation by Morris.

Legal Action

Twenty-five years later, in 2007, Clemishire sought justice. She hired an attorney and threatened to sue Morris, accusing him of repeatedly molesting her as a child. The correspondence obtained by NBC News reveals a troubling response from Morris’s lawyer, J. Shelby Sharpe. He deflected blame onto Clemishire, stating, “It was your client who initiated inappropriate behavior by coming into my client’s bedroom and getting in bed with him, which my client should not have allowed to happen.”

Failed Negotiations

Clemishire sought $50,000 in restitution to cover counseling expenses. Morris, through his legal representation, offered $25,000 on the condition that Clemishire sign a nondisclosure agreement. Clemishire refused, unwilling to be silenced. This impasse led to the collapse of negotiations. Gentner Drummond, who represented Clemishire at the time and is now Oklahoma’s attorney general, confirmed the details of these 2007 negotiations but declined to comment further.

The allegations against Robert Morris highlight significant issues regarding accountability and the handling of sexual misconduct within religious communities. This case underscores the need for transparent and fair processes to address such allegations, irrespective of the accused’s status or influence. The refusal to sign a nondisclosure agreement reflects Clemishire’s determination for her story to be heard and serves as a call for justice
